NAIA International Passenger Traffic Hits 19.93 Million as New Flight Routes Open for Filipino Travelers

International travel through Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) continues to grow despite rising travel costs and disruptions affecting global aviation.

According to figures released by airport operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), international passenger traffic reached 19.93 million between January 1 and October 22, 2026, representing a 2.6% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The figures indicate sustained demand for overseas travel even as airlines navigate higher operating costs and security concerns affecting some international routes.

International Travel Grows While Domestic Traffic Declines

NAIA recorded approximately 507,772 additional international passengers compared with the corresponding period last year.

Domestic passenger traffic, however, declined by 3.4% to around 21.49 million.

The difference highlights how international and domestic travel demand can respond differently to economic conditions. For travelers, it reinforces the importance of comparing airfares and planning ahead, particularly during holidays and peak travel periods.

New International Flights Planned for 2026–2027

Several airline developments could give travelers more international options.

Manila–Chicago: Philippine Airlines is scheduled to introduce nonstop service beginning November 9, 2026, operating three times weekly. The route will connect the Philippines directly with the American Midwest.

Manila–Saipan: PAL announced the restoration of nonstop flights beginning October 25, 2026, expanding travel options between Manila and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Manila–Delhi and Mumbai: PAL plans to launch flights to India in December 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Los Angeles–Manila: Delta Air Lines has announced plans for nonstop service beginning in March 2027.

Passengers should verify actual schedules, availability, fares, and entry requirements directly with the airlines before booking.

NAIA Modernization Continues

Airport operator NNIC has also reported ongoing investments in passenger facilities and airport operations.

Projects include automated immigration gates, improved passenger waiting areas, upgraded baggage-handling infrastructure, transportation facilities, and additional aircraft-handling capacity.

These improvements aim to accommodate increasing passenger demand while making airport operations more efficient.

What This Means for Filipino Travelers

More direct international connections can reduce the need for transit stops and make previously complicated journeys easier to plan.

However, additional routes do not automatically mean cheaper tickets. Airfare prices will still depend on fuel costs, passenger demand, seasonality, competition, and seat availability.

Before booking an international trip, travelers should:

  • Compare total ticket costs, including baggage and other fees.
  • Check passport validity and destination entry requirements.
  • Review airline rebooking and cancellation policies.
  • Allow enough time for airport check-in and immigration procedures.
  • Monitor official travel advisories, especially on routes affected by regional conflicts.

Looking Ahead to 2027

With further international flight services planned for 2027 and airport upgrades continuing, travelers can expect more options when planning overseas holidays and business trips.

For Filipinos preparing their next vacation, the most practical strategy remains simple: research destinations early, compare flights carefully, and stay updated on airline announcements.

Golakbay Travel will continue following major airline developments, airport improvements, travel advisories, and destination opportunities affecting Philippine travelers.
